(WVUE) - You are allowed to get cheesy during this month because April is National Grilled Cheese Month.
It's an American favorite, especially with kids, but its also evolved over the years into gourmet masterpieces served up for adults too.
Food historians say the original grilled cheese sandwiches were prepared open face with American Cheese in the 1920s. But the site Grilledcheesy.com says it later evolved with the addition of a second piece of bread to transform it into a heartier meal.
It goes on to say it grew in popularity during the American Great Depression because they were affordable.
Today, it remains a comfort food made at home or found on many menus. You will also notice across the country how gourmet chefs and food trucks have elevated it with exotic ingredients beyond the initial ingredients of bread,butter and cheese .
These days you wil find grilled cheese with gouda, mushrooms, meatballs, avocado, tomatoes even bacon.
No matter how you like your grilled cheese sandwich there is a cornucopia of choices if you decide to indulge during this month of National Grilled Cheese Month.
