NEW ORLEANS, LA (WVUE) - A New Orleans judge orders the release of seven indigent men whose cases have languished for months without legal representation.
Prosecutors say they will appeal Judge Arthur Hunter's order, which involves cases with alleged crimes ranging from armed robbery to murder.
Public defenders' chief Derwyn Bunton has been saying for months that his office lacks the necessary manpower to handle its workload.
The District Attorney's office issued statement on the matter. "Releasing defendants charged with serious acts of violence poses a clear and present danger to public safety," said Assistant District Attorney Christopher Bowman.
