FOX 8 DEFENDERS: Kyron Hunter trial gets continued

GRETNA, LA (WVUE) - The man at the center of a FOX 8 Defenders rental scam investigation was expected to go on trial Monday in Jefferson Parish, but the case was continued to May 9th.  Thirty-four-year-old Kyron Hunter faces theft and attempted theft charges after detectives say he advertised and rented out properties he didn't own to families in neighborhoods from Gretna to Harvey.
The FOX 8 Defenders were the first to expose what detectives called an elaborate scheme.  We interviewed three families who told us they were victims of the same man and the same scam, paying him thousands of dollars in deposits and rent.

"Yes, every month he was there to pick up the rent," Catina Carter said.  After paying Hunter a deposit and rent for three months, Carter told us last summer her family was shocked to receive an eviction notice.  "I contacted the deputy sheriff, and he told me that no one is supposed to be living in the house.. the bank repossessed it, and it's supposed to be vacant," Carter explained.

Carter's family is one of several we interviewed who faced hefty moving costs when they were forced to find a new place to live with little notice.

Jefferson Parish criminal court documents show Hunter is expected in a Jefferson Parish courtroom again Friday after he was arrested last month on charges of injuring public records, meaning the intentional removal or destruction of records.  He's also facing charge for operating a vehicle with a suspended license and resisting arrest.
