VILLE PLATTE, LA (WVUE) -

The Louisiana State Fire Marshal's Office is investigating a house fire in Ville Platte that claimed the life of a 106-year-old man. The incident occurred Saturday around 9:30 a.m. in the 1000 block of Robert F. Kennedy Drive.

A State Fire Marshal's spokesperson says that Ville Platte firefighters responded to the scene and while getting the fire under control, they found the man's lifeless body inside the home. The victim has been identified as Edward "Knotoe" Thomas, Jr. The spokesperson says that Thomas lived in the home with his daughter and son-in-law. He was the only person in the home at the time of the fire. Investigators say that Thomas is one of the longest-living citizens in Louisiana and is a former Ville Platte police officer, serving 25 years with the department.

According to the spokesperson, the cause of the fire is still under investigation, but investigators have determined that the fire started in the attic.
