NEW ORLEANS, LA (WVUE) - Former St. Charles Parish D.A. Harry Morel pleaded guilty Monday to obstruction of justice as part of a case that alleged he used his position of power to trade leniency for sexual favors.
At one point, U.S. Attorney Kenneth Polite called Morel "a sexual predator." Polite said Morel perverted his position of power over women with more than 20 victims in more than 20 years - women who in many cases were in trouble with the law and needed a break.
Morel's attorney fired back in a statement, calling the sexual predator remark, a "smear tactic" to influence sentencing. Attorney Ralph Capitelli pointed out that his client was not charged with any sexual crimes.
Morel will likely face three years in federal prison. Sentencing is set for August.
