NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) -

A "substantial amount" of shells were spread across multiple crime scenes in Marrero Saturday night where a man was killed and a woman injured.

According to the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office, a deputy was patrolling Acre Road around 10:38 p.m. when he heard gunshots. Someone flagged him down in the 1200 block of Garden Road in Marrero where an unidentified male victim was lying on the sidewalk with multiple gunshot wounds. Police say he had a semi-automatic handgun next to him.

EMS transported the injured man to West Jefferson Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

While investigating the scene on Garden Road, officers were called out to the area around Garden Road and Westbank Expressway where an unidentified female victim was waiting with a gunshot wound to her leg. EMS took her to University Hospital. Her injury is non-life threatening according to JPSO.

Investigators believe the female victim may have been shot at the Garden Road shooting scene as well. Witnesses in the area didn't see what happened, but heard the gunshots according to JPSO.

Crime scene technicians recovered a substantial number of shell casings in the area according to JPSO. Several additional shell casings were also found near the intersection of Garden Road and Chenault Drive.
