SLIDELL, LA (WVUE) - Slidell Police Chief Randy Smith selected a longtime Slidell Police veteran to replace him when he assumes his new post as St. Tammany Parish Sheriff.
Eugene "Butch" Howard will begin working closely with Smith on May 2, 2016 and take over the interim chief duties on this summer. A spokesperson for Slidell Police says Howard is a highly decorated officer who served in the U.S. Army from 1970-1975 and then began his career with the Slidell Police Department. During his tenure Howard served as Chief of Operations, S.W.A.T. Commander, Patrol Commander, Assistant Chief of Detectives and Assistant Chief of Police. Howard retired in 2007 but the department says he's continues his dedication in his role as a reserve officer.
"I have full confidence in Howard to lead the Slidell Police Department. He is no stranger to law enforcement, and we will be working closely to ensure a smooth transition," Slidell Police Chief Randy Smith said.
Smith officially takes over as St. Tammany Sheriff on July 1, 2016. Voters will select a permanent replacement for Smith during a special election in November of this year.
