St Jude Dream Home floor is signed

NEW ORLEANS, LA (WVUE) - Workers are in the last few weeks of construction on the St Jude Dream Home in Lakeview. One of the finishing touches that was put on Thursday is something that the winner won't be able to see.

Contractors, supporters and volunteers signed the subfloor with well wishes, soon to be covered with wooden panel, adding sentimental value to a brand new house worth 600 hundred thousand dollars.

It's not too late to win. Tickets are $100, and all the proceeds benefit the St Jude Children's Research Hospital. Only 12,000 tickets will be sold.

If you do win, you get a West-Indies style home with a New Orleans flare. The house features French doors, a free-standing spiral staircase, and in the master bathroom, a free standing tub with Carrera marble accents. While the details may be fancy, those involved in the annual giveaway say the best thing about this house, is the cause behind it.

"One of the greatest things that we do is the research that we do at St Jude, we provide the research findings to every hospital and every family throughout the world," said James Barkate, who represents St. Jude.

"It means a lot that were doing this for the kids of St. Jude," said contractor Hyman Bartolo. "We really enjoy doing it. Not only that, it's something that brings the company together, a lot of suppliers, and you can see the people here today really enjoy doing what they're doing."

Troy Remy's daughter had cancer, he gives back to St. Jude and told FOX 8 News: "The folks at St. Jude showed us what to do, they took care of us throughout the whole process. She was diagnosed with cancer at 16, now she's 18, she's a senior in high school, cured and now she's going to LSU, going to be a doctor."

Contractors started building the St Jude dream back in December and say it will be finished no later than May 8. The winner will be selected on June 26.
