Car ends up under school bus after crash on West Bank

GRETNA, LA (WVUE) - A school bus driver and several children were taken to the hospital after a car crashed into the bus on the Westbank this afternoon.

A Honda Accord crashed into a school bus carrying children near the corner of Ames Boulevard and August Lane according to Col. John Fortunato, public information officer for the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office.

The driver of the Honda Accord, a 25-year-old man, told police he was traveling North on Ames Boulevard around 3 p.m. when the traffic signal in front of him changed. The driver told police that he hit his brakes, but skid on the wet roadway and crashed into the driver's side of the bus, wedging his car underneath.

Officers on the scene cited the driver for Careless Operation of a Motor Vehicle.

The bus driver, a 46-year-old woman, was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. Out of the 33 children on the bus, 12 complained of head, back or shoulder pain. Several of the student's family members arrived on the scene and took them to a nearby hospital by private conveyance.

Fortunato said no ones injuries appear life threatening.
