NEW ORLEANS, LA (WVUE) -

New Orleans Police prepare to put more manpower on the street.

28 members of NOPD recruit class #174 will take part in a graduation ceremony Friday, April 29.

The recruits started training in October of last year.

They spent eight hours a day in class for 26 weeks.

After graduation, the recruits will be assigned to district stations and partnered with a Field Training Officer for another 16 weeks of on the job training.

The ceremony will take place at 10:00 a.m. in the auditorium of McDonogh 35 High School on Cadillac St.

Another class of 29 recruits are expected to complete their training later this summer, while a new class of recruits will begin training in May.

The department budgeted to hire 150 new officers in 2016.
