Homeless woman arrested in Houma after panhandling assault

HOUMA, LA (WVUE) -

Houma police arrested a homeless woman Thursday after she was accused of aggressively panhandling and assaulting a police officer.

Around 11 a.m. police responded to a call at the intersection of Effie and Judith Streets for a disturbance.

While responding, the learned a woman, later identified as Latoia Celestine, 38, was attempting to fight with several people.

According to police, Celestine approached two women asking for money. When the request was refused, she began threatening the women. One of the women told police Celestine hit her, knocking her to the ground while demanding money.

When Celestine learned one of the victims called police, she left the area, but was caught a short time later.

Once in custody, Celestine began making threats to the arresting officer.

She was subsequently arrested and charged with two counts of attempted simple robbery, simple battery, attempted simple criminal damage to property and simple assault on a police officer.

Celestine was transported to the Houma City jail.
