Defensive redemption could come for the Saints

(FOX 8) (FOX 8)
NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) -

Some Saints fans said they feel the team's lagging defense is their biggest downfall. Thursday, the Saints may have gotten the boost they need with the 12th overall pick in the 2016 NFL draft.  The Saints selected Sheldon Rankins, a defensive end from Louisville.

Who Dats are finding optimism, hoping to get some defensive redemption in Rankin.

“That’s what we need, we need somebody who can put pressure on the quarterback and hopefully he can do his job I guess,” said Saints fan Sonny Harris.

Rankins is coming off of a very productive year with the Cardinals, with six sacks and 13 tackles for loss.

Rankin's talents should be a good compliment to Cam Jordan. He's a guy that can get to the quarterback, a skill the Saints could use, seeing how the defense has been considered one of the worst in the league for the past few years.

"He's explosive. He definitely is a pressure player. We feel he can affect the pass rush. He is someone that wins with initial quickness. He's got really good football instincts,” Saints Head Coach Sean Payton said.

Rankin has admitted that he was a Falcons fan and a Michael Vick fan, but one Saints fan told us he just hopes Rankin can live up to the expectations.

“We don’t know this guy, we know what he did in college, but we don’t know what he's going to do on a pro team because it's a whole new ball game," fan Leland Roussell said.

The Saints still have a busy weekend ahead. Friday, they have the 47th and 78th pick.
