Inclement weather prompts shortened 2016 Zurich Classic

AVONDALE, LA (WVUE) - The nasty weather that moved through the New Orleans area has prompted officials with the Zurich Classic to alter the 2016 tournament. With the chance for more stormy weather on Monday, officials have shortened the tournament to 54 holes and third-round play is set to resume Monday morning, according to a tournament spokesperson. It is the first time in 12 years that the tournament play has been pushed to a Monday and the first time in 31 years that it has been shortened to 54 holes.

The tournament resumed play Sunday at 7:31 a.m. but was suspended at 10:08 a.m. due to heavy winds and storms. Play was called at 4:40 p.m. after 1.5 inches of rain fell at the TPC of Louisiana course in Avondale.

Brian Stuard and Jhonattan Vegas both sit atop the leaderboard at 13-under through five holes.
