NEW ORLEANS, LA (WVUE) -

You can play a free game on your smartphone and help doctors studying a debilitating disease at the same time. Designers of "Sea Hero Quest" say the game will help researchers studying the beginning stages of dementia.

The game asks players to set sail in search of precious artifacts, which can be collected at different locations around the world. "To us as scientists we can see and learn how well people are able to use maps, remember things they've passed, how well they're able to get sense of how far they've moved in the world. Whether they can cope with mist and fog, all these sorts of things are actually really may differ, depending on your background and age and other factors," said University College London neuroscientist Hugo Spiers. "You know it packs a real punch this science inside the game."

Users of Apple and Android devices can download Sea Hero Quest.
