Big Fish Report: Heading offshore where the yellowfin are biting

(WVUE) -

This weekend is shaping to be a great one for fishing. The strong inshore catches continue, but if you want something a little different, head offshore.

Capt. Peace Marvel and a few friends headed out into the Gulf of Mexico for great day on the water. Peace and his deckhand, Justin, have been on a roll catching swordfish in the deep waters of the Gulf. Marvel currently has six of the top 10 state records in swordfish and continues to improve his record.

“While we didn't see one of the giants of the deep, we did luck into a large school of yellowfin tuna and 6- to 8-foot-long dusky sharks,” marvel said. “Keeping the shark off of your bait and your fish was a real challenge, but a whole lot of fun.”

My tuna came in just a hair lighter than it started thanks to one of the hungry duskies.

The yellowfin tuna bite is crazy right now. If you've ever thought of making an offshore trip, now is with any doubt the right time.
While we never hooked up on a sword, seeing monster sharks and catching big yellowfin made for a great day.
