NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) - The Coast Guard has suspended it's search for a missing man who reportedly fell off the Causeway Bridge after discovering he may not have fallen at all.
The Coast Guard was first notified just before noon on May 6 that a man had fallen from the Southbound Causeway Bridge near the South Shore landing. According to the Coast Guard, watchstanders were told the man fell through a gap in the fence near the beginning of the 35 MPH zone.
A 24-foot Special Purpose Craft was launched along with a shallow water crew and an MH-65 Dolphin Helicopter crew to search the area. The Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office and the Causeway Police Department responded as well.
However, on Saturday morning, the Coast Guard said that video surveillance showed no one had fallen from the bridge into Lake Pontchartrain. The search was then suspended.
