SLIDELL, LA (WVUE) - The St. Tammany Parish Sheriff's Department has opened an investigation after the body of a man was recovered from Lake Pontchartrain. According to a St. Tammany Parish Coroner spokesperson, the discovery of the body was made Saturday, just after noon near Northshore Beach in Slidell.
The victim has been identified as 28-year-old Joshua Entrekin.
Witnesses told investigators that Entrekin was drinking with friends and after going into the lake, he never resurfaced.
Police say that they believe Entrekin died as a result of an accidental drowning. St. Tammany Parish Coroner Dr. Charles Preston, will perform an autopsy, Monday, to determine the exact cause of death.
"Louisiana has the third-highest drowning rate in the nation, and ironically, I just received a letter from the Department of Health and Hospitals yesterday stressing this fact," Preston said. "With warmer weather upon us and many more opportunities to enjoy outdoor recreation in the summer months, it's vital that we all take precautions to protect ourselves and our loved ones.
