Washington Parish man arrested for impersonating officer

WASHINGTON PARISH, LA (WVUE) - Authorities arrested man in Washington Parish who allegedly scammed someone by impersonating a police officer.

Washington Parish Sheriff's Office detectives and Louisiana State Probation and Parole agents picked up Charles Gates, 44, a resident of Thigpen Road in Franklinton.

The victim told police Gates called three times asking for money to help a relative of the victim. She was told to send a total of $150 by Western Union. After complying she realized later that she was scammed.

Investigators traced Gates through his cell phone number, which he used to contact the victim.

Gates was placed in the Washington Parish Jail on May 9 with bond set at $60,518.  He was booked with impersonating a police officer, being a fugitive from another jurisdiction, and failure to appear.

"No law enforcement officer will ever call and ask for money over the telephone," Sheriff Randy Seal said. "I regret very much that this lady was scammed out of $150, and I am glad our detectives could identity Gates and make the arrest."
