NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) -

A New Orleans City Council committee will consider a proposal aimed at helping citizens with credit problems find jobs.

The Economic Development and Special Developments Projects Committee is scheduled to meet at 10 a.m. to consider a proposal from council member Jared Brossett.

The proposed ordinance would make it illegal for city contractors to base employment decisions on a candidate’s credit history.

Brossett’s proposal – the “Equal Access to Employment Act” -- is designed to help those looking for employment increase their odds of finding a job.

There are some exceptions under the proposal. Candidates for positions handling money, digital security, trade secrets, intelligence information or national security information, would not be covered by the proposed ordinance.
