NEW ORLEANS, LA (WVUE) -

The New Orleans Police Department has upgraded charges after a shootout Wednesday night closed down a major thoroughfare on the west bank.

A little before 7 p.m., officers responded to a call of shots fired on Behrman Road and Texas Drive. Originally, the incident was categorized as aggravated criminal damage to property. After investigating further and talking with witnesses, the incident has been reclassified as aggravated assault.

According to an NOPD spokeswoman, a car with three adults and two children were in the left lane on Behrman Place preparing to turn left onto Behrman Road when an unknown person driving a black Malibu pulled alongside the victims’ car and opened fire. The adults grabbed the children out of the car and ran to safety.

The car was riddled with bullets but no one was hit and no injuries were reported. Behrman Highway from Gen. DeGaulle Drive to the Jefferson Parish line was closed for a couple of hours.

The gunman, who has not been caught, faces five counts of aggravated assault.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call Crimestoppers at (504) 822-1111.
