NEW ORLEANS, LA (WVUE) -

Tulane head coach David Pierce preaches pitching and defense and he got both in Tulane's 1-0 victory over Memphis to open their final home series.

Emerson Gibbs overpowered the Tigers from the start. He gave up just three hits on the night and struck out nine in eight innings of work.

Meanwhile, the Green Wave did just enough at the plate to secure the win. It wasn’t until the bottom of the eighth when Lex Kaplan delivered the single to bring in Stephen Alemais from third. It’s a bit of a habit. Six of Tulane’s series opening games this season have been decided by one run or less.

The Green Wave improve to 34-14 overall and maintain their lead atop the American Athletic Conference standings at 13-5.
