METAIRIE, LA (WVUE) - Two people were killed in a Monday morning accident on the Interstate -10 Service Road South near Edenborn Avenue.
Witnesses say the accident was caused when the driver of a blue 2007 convertible Mustang was speeding down the I-10 Service Road in blue mustang clipped a silver Volkswagen.
A witness walking by at the time said the speeding mustang went airborne and landed on its side, partially wrapped around and utility pole.
Two occupants of the vehicle, both women, were pronounced dead at the scene. Jefferson Parish Fire Department crews had to extricate the women from the wreckage.
Their names are being withheld pending family notification.
Jefferson Parish Coroner Gerry Cvitanovich said two victims died at the scene.
Another witness said that moments before the fatal accident, there was another accident involving the driver of the Mustang.
The witness said the driver of the Mustang stopped as though she was going to exchange insurance information, but then sped off. It was then she was involved in the fatal accident.
Witnesses reported seeing the Mustang heading onto the I-10 Service Rd. South heading west, at a high rate of speed. As the driver neared the intersection of Edenborn Avenue, the Mustang, which was now traveling against traffic, struck a 2016 Volkswagen Jetta, driven by a 54-year-old Metairie man.
On impact, the Mustang overturned and skidded into the utility pole. The driver of the Jetta was not injured.
