NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) - New Orleans Saints and Pelicans owner Tom Benson testified in a deposition that his daughter and grandchildren "tried to kill him" during a confrontation in a Mercedes Benz Superdome suite, according to court document released Thursday.
In the deposition taken March 28 and 29 of 2016, Benson was asked why he is seeking to remove control of his sports franchises from Renee Benson and Rita Benson LeBlanc.
"They tried to kill me for one thing," Benson said in the federal court record.
The Saints owner was asked what he meant by that statement and he said, "you know, by picking on my wife and when I wasn't feeling very good they were very hostile."
Benson and his estranged family are fighting over his fortune after he announced that his wife, Gayle, would take over when he dies. That move seemed at odds with an irrevocable trust Benson had set up earlier which granted future ownership of the teams to his daughter, Renee, and her children, Rita and Ryan.
Forbes magazine estimates the Louisiana sports magnate has a net worth of $2.2 billion. His biggest asset, the Saints, is worth more than $1.4 billion.
