Report: AK-47 used in Central City carjacking

Police are investigating two armed carjackings in New Orleans, one reportedly involving an assault rifle.

According to preliminary reports from NOPD, two armed men stole a woman's car in Gentilly Friday afternoon and a man armed with an AK-47 stole a man's car in Central City later that night.

The first carjacking was reported around 1:14 p.m. in the 2100 block of Carnot Street. According to the preliminary report from NOPD, two armed black men approached a 60-year-old woman and demanded her car keys. The woman complied and the two armed robbers drove away in her car.

No description of the vehicle was given.

The second carjacking occurred just after 11 p.m. near the corner of Harmony and Dryades Street. According to the preliminary report from NOPD, an unknown black man armed with an AK-47 approached a 43-year-old man and demanded he empty his pockets. The man complied and the armed man then drove away in his vehicle.

Police say the vehicle was later recovered.
