NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) - A federal judge will convene a hearing that could drastically change the direction of Orleans Parish Prison.
The justice department asked that a receiver be brought in to turn things around.
But Tuesday, around 20 local ministers and politicians gathered in a show of support for Sheriff Marlin Gusman and local control.
"There are jails and prisons all across the country. I don't know of any jail, where pre or post-adjudicated, where they are without incident, or without problems. To suggest this facility be without that is ludicrous. Amen," said Rev. Dwight Webster of Christian Unity Baptist Church.
The ministers say in spite of concerns raised by consent decree monitors, the jail is headed in the right direction.
The jail is housing 886 inmates. The sheriff sent nearly 700 inmates to jails across the state to re-train staff.
