Countdown to camp: Dennis Allen takes over

METAIRIE, LA (WVUE) - He is the fifth defensive coordinator of the Sean Payton-era. But unlike his predecessor Rob Ryan, Dennis Allen has a much more succinct approach.

The Saints are hoping that simplistic style will help get this defense out of the dumps that's it been the last two seasons.

In Allen's small sample size of six games last year, the Saints showed modest improvement. Key word being "modest." Under Ryan they gave up 31 points a game; under Allen it was 26 points per game. With Ryan they gave up 424 yards per game; under Allen it was 396 yards per game. With Ryan there were 13 takeaways in ten games. With Allen there was nine in six games.

So while they were slightly better under Allen, they weren't nearly good enough. The Saints still would have been no better than 26th in the league in any defensive category.

Now accountability will completely shift to Allen, who will be charged improving a unit that's had a tough time finding its way.
