When news broke that the Rams were parting ways with linebacker James Laurinaitis, the Saints wasted no time in expressing their interest in him. They were determined to be the first team to bring him in for a visit, and there's a reason for that.
Laurinaitis' veteran steady hand is exactly what this defense needs at "mike" linebacker. Too many times last season there was confusion with the defensive call when it came in from Rob Ryan to then-rookie Stephone Anthony. It led to busted assignments and big plays for opposing offenses.
This year, clarity is the key term. Everything is clearly communicated from coordinator Dennis Allen to Laurinaitis, then to the rest of the defense. The end result is yet to be determined, but at the very least, less confusion can lead to a better chance of success on every defensive play, which can hopefully lead to more wins.
