St. Jude patient tours dream home and tells her story

St. Jude patient tours dream home in Lakeview

NEW ORLEANS, LA (WVUE) - Tickets for the St. Jude Dream Home sold out, but there's still time to give to a great cause. All money raise by the St. Jude Dream Home Giveaway will help the kids at St. Jude Hospital. One thankful patient gave herself a tour of the house.

"Let's take a look at the kitchen," said 11-year-old Reagan as she shows off the place built to help kids like her. "This is a cool stove."

Doctors at St. Jude saved her life.

"She was a very healthy girl. She played basketball, swam on summer swim team, also gymnastics and soccer. We never thought she'd be sick," said her mom, Shelley.

The family's St. Jude journey began two years ago when her active daughter complained of pain in her stomach. A visit to the pediatrician was followed by a diagnosis of cancer after the doctor found a large mass. One week later, Reagan's family was at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, where they found it was a Stage III germ cell tumor.

"It was devastating because we didn't know if it was a cancer that was curable. We didn't know if she was going to make it. I didn't know if it was terminal. It was the worst a parent can feel," Shelley said.

Reagan said she was crying because she didn't really know what it was. Her family found comfort at St. Jude.

"When you get there, they take care of everything. You walk in the door, you have someone show you around, and they give you a sense of peace there," Shelley said.

After two years, several chemotherapy treatments and surgery, Reagan is in remission. She only goes to the hospital every six months for checkups. She appreciates the care she received.

"St. Jude is an awesome place," Reagan said.

The St. Jude Dream Home Giveaway is tonight, June 26, on Fox 8. Our hour-long live special starts at 5 p.m.
