BATON ROUGE, LA (WVUE) - In the finale of a regional that seemed more like a marathon after countless rain delays, it was LSU who finished on a sprint to beat Rice, 5-2 Tuesday, to advance to the Super Regional.
The Owls jumped out to a quick lead, scoring once in the first and second innings. The 2-0 lead would hold until the top of the seventh. After Jake Fraley scored on a sacrifice foul ball to cut the deficit in half, New Orleanian and former Brother Martin Crusader, Greg Deichmann stepped to the plate with Kramer Robertson on second and lifted a long shot just over the centerfield wall to put LSU up 3-2. The Tigers would score two more in the eighth inning and hold on to win.
Junior lefthanded pitcher Jared Poche came on in relief in the third inning and threw six scoreless frames, allowing just one hit and zero walks with six strikeouts.
Baton Rouge will play host to the Super Regional against Coastal Carolina, the 2-seed which clinched the Raleigh, North Carolina regional, earlier Tuesday.
