NEW ORLEANS, LA (WVUE) - The man accused of killing an NOPD officer while driving drunk Sunday on Interstate 10 made his first court appearance Tuesday.
Chau Thai Nguyen appeared in Magistrate Court in a wheelchair, his arms and feet bandaged with injuries he sustained when he crashed his vehicle into the back of 31-year-old Natasha Hunter's police unit.
Nguyen said in court that his family is trying to retain a lawyer. In the meantime, he is being represented by a public defender.
Prosecutors said that Nguyen has a prior record that includes a misdemeanor arrest for taking a vehicle without the owner's consent. He was convicted and served 60 days in jail.
Prosecutors also said that Nguyen has admitted to drinking at Harrah's Casino the night of the crash. Nguyen's friends described him as a good person who doesn't drink excessively.
The public defender asked for a $75,000 bond, however, the judge sided with prosecutors and set his bond at $1 million.
