BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - A candidate who had just registered to run for one of Louisiana's congressional seats was arrested after signing up for the race. Billy Burkette, an independent from Pride, qualified Friday for the 5th District congressional race representing northeast Louisiana. Shortly after Burkette filed his paperwork at the secretary of state's office, sheriff's deputies held him onsite and arrested him on an outstanding warrant. Burkette is accused of falsely impersonating a police officer.

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - Louisiana's governor is spending the weekend in New Mexico to meet with the nation's other governors. Democratic Gov. John Bel Edwards and his wife Donna traveled to Sante Fe on Friday for the National Governor's Association summer meeting, a bipartisan gathering of governors from around the country.

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries says one of its cadets died after collapsing at the training academy. The agency announced Friday that 38-year-old Immanuel Washington, of Youngsville, died a day earlier at a Baton Rouge hospital. Washington was in his third week of training to become an enforcement agent.

NEW ORLEANS (AP) - Texas prison officials are offering cold water, cold showers and opportunities to cool off in air-conditioned chapels and offices to thousands of inmates in lock-ups without central air-conditioning in a wide swath of the state under an excessive-heat warning. Texas Department of Criminal Justice spokesman Jeremy Desel says the policy was expanded statewide for the first time in the agency's history on Friday.
