MONROE, La. (AP) - A Louisiana teenager is trying to become the youngest pilot to circumnavigate the globe. The News Star reports Mason William Andrews took off Sunday from the Monroe Regional Airport. Andrews is 18 years and about 120 days old. The youngest pilot to ever fly around the Earth is Lachlan Smart, an Australian, who completed his flight in 2016. Andrews' flight should take between 30 and 40 days. He says weather is his biggest concern.

NEW ORLEANS (AP) - Tulane University has won a $10 million grant to study school reform across the country. The New Orleans Advocate reports the U.S. Department of Education's Institute of Education Sciences awarded the five-year grant. It will pay for research on how voucher programs, charter schools and other choice programs in cities can help disadvantaged students. Tulane researchers are teaming up with experts at Syracuse, the University of Southern California and Michigan State University.

NEW ORLEANS (AP) - A local New Orleans funk band says their equipment has been stolen near a popular bar in the city's Uptown area. News outlets report the New Orleans Suspects said in a Facebook post Sunday that their equipment was taken from their van while it was parked around the corner from the Maple Leaf Bar. The band set up a GoFundMe page to raise money to replace the gear. The group listed some of the items it lost on the fundraising site including keyboards, guitar amps and a custom drum kit.

NEW ORLEANS (AP) - A Louisiana judge has set a March 11 trial date for the man accused of killing a New Orleans police officer last fall. Times-Picayune reports Criminal District Judge Franz Zibilich set the trial date for Darren Bridges on Friday after ruling on a series of defense motions to suppress evidence. Bridges faces a first-degree murder charge in the death of 29-year-old Marcus McNeil, a three-year police veteran, on Oct. 13, 2017. He faces a potential death sentence if convicted.
