NEW ORLEANS, LA (WVUE) -

A Metairie family is in Orlando Sunday night, looking for their loved one. They say New Orleans-native, 39-year-old Leonel Melendez was at Pulse nightclub at the time of the shooting, and is still missing.

Sunday morning, David Melendez woke up and immediately reached out to his brother, Leonel, who lives in Orlando.

“This morning, around 7:30, I actually text him and said man, I saw it on Facebook and I texted him, me and him were really close, so I text him the link, like oh...what happened here? And I never heard back from him," David explains.

The Melendez family learned through friends, that Leonel was at Pulse nightclub Saturday night but no one knows if he made it out alive.

David explains, "I’m hoping. It’s sad to say this but I’m hoping he's wounded because it’s not like my brother to not contact us, especially my mom, he calls her every single morning.”

David, an Army recruiter, who just took an emergency leave of absence from his job, says he's sickened by the shooting.

“Yes, very angry, especially being in the military, just being in the service, it makes you even more angry when you hear something like this,” David commented.

Sunday afternoon, David, along with his sister, mom and his brother's best friend, hopped on a flight from New Orleans to Orlando, to try to locate Leonel.

“My mom is very, very religious so yes, we are all praying, hoping for the best,” David explained.

He says at this point, they just hope his brother is still alive.
