Saints balance young with the old

METAIRIE, LA (WVUE) - The majority of the 90-players on the mini-camp roster were on the field Wednesday morning, getting in another two-hour workout with threatening skies up above.

It's an interesting Saints roster right now. Over half of the players on it have been in the NFL for two years or less. And one quarter of the roster is made up of rookies.

It means a lot of teaching is going on, not only by the coaching staff, but veteran players like Drew Brees and Zach Strief, are also having to chip in.

Every team has roster turnover, where the young ones usually out-number the older guys. But, finding the right balance between the two is the key to sustained success.

"I just think that's who we've gone out and acquired in the draft and through free agency is guys that have that track record," said Saints quarterback Drew Brees. "You see it on film, you hear it from people that have played with them, played against them, there's a level of respect for all the free agents guys that we brought in because we know they were that type of guys and the guys we drafted, that's the type we're looking for and that's what we built this program on is character and toughness."
