NEW ORLEANS, LA (WVUE) - At a time of heightened concerns about abuse of prescription painkillers, New Orleans Police are offering residents a secure way to dispose of unwanted prescription medicine.
Residents can bring unused, expired or unwanted drugs to a drop-off box located at the NOPD's Central Evidence and Property facility.
The facility at 1116 Magnolia at Earhart Boulevard will accept unwanted prescription drugs around the clock, seven days a week.
"This is a safe solution to disposing of unused and unneeded prescription drugs and keeping them out of the hands of people who could potentially harm themselves or others," said NOPD Superintendent Michael Harrison in a department news release.
Police stress the drop-off box is meant only for prescription pharmaceuticals, not illegal narcotics, inhalers, syringes or liquid medications.
All deposits to the drop-off box are anonymous.
