NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) - Orleans Parish Sheriff Marlin Gusman may talk this morning about an agreement sources say has been reached with the U.S. Justice Department that averts a full federal takeover of the New Orleans jail.
Sources confirmed to Fox 8 that a deal is likely to be announced during a status conference before Federal District Court Judge Lance Africk Tuesday morning. Both sides are expected to attend the hearing.
While details of the deal have not yet been released, but it would end weeks of federal hearings to determine if a third party should step in and run the jail after allegations of violence and mismanagement at the jail.
Sources confirmed yesterday that the agreement was reached between the sheriff and lawyers for the U.S. Justice Department and Representative Cedric Richmond, who issued a news release yesterday saying the compromise would prevent a federal takeover of the jail.
While the full details of the plan have yet to be announced, Fox 8 has learned the plan could allow Gusman to retain some control over the jail.
Judge Africk will have the final day on the possible agreement.
