NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) -

New Orleans firefighters pulled a frightened kitten from a storm drain after it had become trapped near Dillard University.

A woman doing yard work at her house near Pauger St. and Lafrienere St. heard the kitten meowing and walked to a nearby firehouse to report the incident Tuesday afternoon.

Firemen had to lift the top of the storm drain, climb in and try to grab the cat, but could not coax it into being rescued.

Another fireman was able to remove a nearby manhole cover to get better access to the kitten.

He had some cat food and was able to get the kitten to safety.

The woman who contacted firefighters brought a cat carrier and kept the feline.
