NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) - A Metairie native shot in the Orlando night club massacre remains in a medically induced coma this morning.
But New Orleanians are urged to turn out today to help his family.
A blood drive is happening today at the I Heart radio station at 929 Howard Avenue.
The blood collected will be sent to area hospitals. However, the blood center will be donating money to Leonel Melendez's family for his medical costs.
The 39-year-old Metairie native was inside the Pulse nightclub when he was shot by Omar Mateen.
He was shot in the head and placed into a medically induced coma. His family has been by his side praying for a miracle in his recovery.
David Melendez, brother Leonel Melendez, said the family has been overwhelmed with support from people here and across the country.
Today's blood drive will end at 3 p.m.
