JEFFERSON PARISH, LA (WVUE) -

A wall outside the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office West Bank headquarters stands as a reminder of the deputies who have been killed in the line of duty.

According to our records, Wednesday’s killing of 50-year-old Deputy David F. Michel Jr. is the fifth deputy-involved shooting of 2016.

The first happened in early January when investigators said Equan Anderson hit a JPSO deputy with his car and was eventually caught after being shot twice.

The second was the only other incident this year that saw a deputy shot by a suspect, when Steven Arnold sustained what was initially thought to be a life-threatening injury after he was shot during a DEA raid. Investigators arrested Jarvis Hardy in connection with that shooting. Arnold is recovering from his injuries

And then just before Mardi Gras day, JPSO deputies were chasing a suspect from the west bank into New Orleans when they shot and killed Eric Harris. Investigators said Harris was moving his car in the direction of the deputies when they opened fire.

And then finally in March, a deputy opened fire on Domonique Battle as investigators said he tried to escape custody at University Medical Center. Battle was caught, but not shot in that incident.
