NEW ORLEANS, LA (WVUE) -

Drilling moves one company closer to developing a north shore fracking operation.

According to our partners at Nola.com|The Times-Picayune, Helis Oil & Gas Co. started drilling an exploratory well north of Interstate 12 June 29. Helis Oil & Gas Co. workers will study data from the well for months before deciding whether to seek approval for fracking operations.

The drilling starts less than two weeks after a state supreme court vote. The court decided not to take up an appeal by people opposed to the project.

Opponents argue drilling in the area violates zoning regulations. Some of them are concerned about potential environmental damage.
