BATON ROUGE, LA (WVUE) - Starting today, some Louisiana residents who receive food stamps will be required to participate job search and skills training to continue receiving benefits.
The new rules were created in an executive order signed in April by Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards.
The new requirements only apply to non-working, able-bodied adults who don't have children and participate in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).
Recipients who are working or in school are not required to follow the new rules.
Edwards says the new requirements are part of a commitment to get Louisianans back to work.
Those subject to the new requirements need to report to one of 59 business and career solution centers where they will receive job search assistance and referrals to available programs.
There are about 18,000 SNAP recipients who are exempt from the new requirements.
