Activists hope a lawsuit will lead to the restoration of voting rights for tens of thousands of people serving probation or parole for felony offenses in Louisiana.

Representatives of Voice of the Ex-Offender say they filed the lawsuit July 1. They argue restricting voting rights for people who are on parole or probation violates Louisiana's constitution.

According to our partners at Nola.com|The Times-Picayune, Governor John Bel Edwards and Secretary of State Tom Schedler are named as defendants in the suit. Edwards' office did not immediately respond to an emailed request for comment. A spokeswoman for the secretary of state says he has not been served with the lawsuit yet.
