INDEPENDENCE, LA (WVUE) - A 7-year-old girl drowned while swimming in Independence. The incident occurred Saturday on Alessi Road.
Police say that officers responded to a medical call in which a young girl accidentally drowned while swimming in an old gravel pit with her friends and family. The girl's mother became worried when she did not see her daughter for a few minutes. The girls body was recovered about 10 yards from the shore by a local spear fisherman, according to police.
The girl received CPR until first responders from the Independence Fire Department and Acadian Ambulance Services arrived on scene. A helicopter brought the child to North Oaks Medical Center where she later passed away.
According to police, charges will not be filed as a result of the incident. Police warn that gravel pits are considered extremely dangerous because there is no way of knowing what was left behind in the pits after years of dredging.
