(WVUE) - Starting Aug. 1, it will be a crime to claim more than one homestead exemption in Louisiana.
According to legislation signed by Gov. John Bel Edwards, individuals who claim more than one homestead exemption are subject to a $500 fine, six months in prison and they'll be forced to pay back the wrongfully claimed exemption.
State law allows only one homestead exemption of $75,000 per person on owned property that's considered a domicile or permanent owned residence.
Disabled veterans in the state may be eligible for a $150,000 homestead exemption.
