Shootout in Hammond Wal Mart parking lot sends one to the hospital

HAMMOND, LA (WVUE) - A shootout in the parking lot of a Hammond Wal Mart sent one man to the hospital Tuesday night.

Witnesses told police that the drivers and passengers of a silver Chevrolet Malibu with out-of-state plates and a black Nissan Maxima were involved in the shooting at the Wal Mart in the 2700 block of West Thomas Street.

Witnesses said two suspects, described as black males, got out of the Malibu. The passenger had a handgun and fired one shot at the Maxima.

The driver of the Maxima accelerated toward the shooter, who fired another shot at the approaching car.

The driver of the Maxima then fled the parking lot with the driver of the Malibu in chasing.

Shortly thereafter, Hammond police received another call of shots fired in a different location near Louisiana Avenue.

Police found the Maxima at that location.

Shortly after that, police received a call from North Oaks Health System that man matching a suspect's description, had come in with a non-life threatening gunshot wound.

Police determined this was the passenger in the Maxima.
