Woman shot by JPSO deputy charged with 27 counts of burglary

KENNER, LA (WVUE) -

A woman injured last week after leading Jefferson Parish sheriff’s deputies on a chase that ended in Kenner will be charged with 27 counts of simple burglary.

Melissa Belanger, 40, is accused of committing vehicle burglaries between June 14 and July 11 to feed her heroin habit, according to Kenner police.

A JPSO deputy shot Belanger on Friday after a car chase that ended with the suspect allegedly trying to hit an officer with her truck.

Belanger was taken to a local hospital to be treated for her injuries.

Members of the Kenner Police Department interviewed the woman on Tuesday. They said she admitted to stealing property that she could sell or exchange for heroin.

Burglaries were reported in the 5400 blocks of Shamrops and Craig, 2400 block of Palm Vista, 3100 block of Maryland, 3500 block of Lake Trail, 4800 and 4900 blocks of Janice, the 5000 and 5100 blocks of Rebecca, the 4300 block of Iowa, the 3300 block of Colorado, and Schill Avenue.

At the time of this press release, Belanger remains in custody.
