ST. TAMMANY PARISH, LA (WVUE) -

A St. Tammany Parish Sheriff's deputy donated his kidney to a St. John Parish deputy who was wounded during an ambush shooting in 2012.

St. Tammany Parish Deputy Robert "Andre" Ardeneaux stepped forward earlier this month to say he would be willing to donate to his "brother in blue" Deputy Jason Triche.

"If I was in his situation, I would hope someone would step up and do it for me. I couldn't think of a better person to give it to," Deputy Ardeneaux said.

Two St. John Parish deputies, Jeremy Triche and Brandon Nielson, died in the ambush in August 2012. Deputy Jason Triche (no relation to Jeremy Triche) was severely injured. Both of his kidneys were failing, which made today's transplant surgery even more critical.

The St. Tammany Parish Sheriff's Office says today's surgery was a success and both Ardeneaux and Triche are recovering and doing well.
