CAUGHT ON CAMERA: Surveillance video shows fatal JPSO officer-involved shooting

METAIRIE, LA (WVUE) - A fatal Tuesday night confrontation between a Jefferson Parish sheriff's deputy and a man fleeing capture was captured on security camera video from a newspaper warehouse in Metairie.

The video shows a man raising what appears to be a gun and pointing it at JPSO Deputy David Dalton, who then shot and killed the man.

Authorities have identified the man as Devon Martes, 17, of Metairie, according to the Jefferson Parish Coroner.

According to initial police reports, the shooting occurred after deputies responded to a call just before midnight reporting two suspects rolling shiny objects down the street near the intersection of Ford Street and Cleary Avenue.

The suspects were seen jumping a fence in the area of a new vehicle storage lot.

Another call was received reporting the suspects were running toward the I-10 Service Road.

A search of the area discovered a suspect, described as a black male, running towards the garage area of The Times-Picayune building at 4013 North I-10 Service Road.

Dalton saw the suspect, wearing blue jeans and a black T-shirt enter the garage on the north end of the building.

As Dalton pursued the suspect, the suspect turned to face Dalton and pointed a handgun at him.

Dalton fired six shots at the suspect. The suspect collapsed and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The suspect was holding a 9mm handgun with an obliterated serial number.

A search of the vehicle parking lot, turned up a new Ford pick-up truck, missing two tires and wheels, resting on blocks.
