Two recent New Orleans homicide victims identified by coroner

The Orleans Parish coroner has released the identities of two recent homicide victims.

Corey Mercadel, 38, was shot to death on July 25 near the intersection of North Dorgenois and D’Abadie streets.

Around 9 p.m. that night police were called to the area for a report of fireworks but found nothing happening.

Officers returned to the area the following morning after receiving a call about a body near an abandoned house.

When they arrived, officers found Mercadel lying on the ground and a number of spent shell casings nearby. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Leo Bates, 49, was stabbed to death on July 27 in an apartment in the 2300 block of Washington Avenue.

Police responded to a call around 10 p.m. Wednesday to an apartment complex in the 2300 block of Washington Avenue.

When they arrived they found Bates suffering from a stab wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
