Jairus Byrd running with first team at Saints training camp

Day 1 of Saints camp: Who's in and who's out

WEST SULPHUR SPRINGS, WV (WVUE) - The injury list was short on the first day of camp, and the most notable exception is safety Jairus Byrd. He was running with the first team and looks to finally end his injury problems.

"He's just happy and humble. When you go through an injury like him, it took so long to get back. You got the naysayers saying this and that, when he's going to be on the field. You're just happy to be out there and put those cleats on the ground. I just want to get on tape with him. I want to play with Jairus. We all know what he can do when he's healthy, and I'm just excited to see him healthy," said safety Kenny Vaccaro.

Not only were teammates fired up for his return, but also his head coach. Byrd signed a massive six-year, 54 million dollar deal two years ago, and the Saints are ready for some return.

"He spent, obviously, an inordinate amount of time rehabbing and working in the training room. You know, he handled the conditioning test extremely well. We don't have any (restrictions). We'll be smart with the reps, but we'll keep track of how many reps these guys are all doing," said Saints Head Coach Sean Payton.

With Byrd back in the mix, the secondary looks like a strong area of the team. Now the goal is to improve the dreadful defense.

"All we can do is go up. Hopefully, I know we're going to improve. The way these guys are working. The way the locker room is, the way Dennis Allen is coaching. The mentality that we all have, it's just different," said Vaccaro.

The first time the Saints can put on the pads and hit each other will be this Saturday. By then we should know who's 100 percent healthy.
